“I know you can do it.
Little did I know these six simple words would change not only a stranger’s life but my own.”
- Sponsor & Mentor
Each of us can remember someone who shared these six simple words with us as we were growing up. Making a commitment to Shepherds is a decision to share these six simple words and change a young person’s life.
Shepherds, Inc. is a nondenominational nonprofit organization that opens the door of opportunity to disadvantaged inner city Connecticut youth with a quality college preparatory education at a non-public high school and the introduction of a positive role model - a Mentor - who fills a void in their lives.
Coming from different walks of life, Shepherds Mentors and Students share a journey that changes both their lives. Shepherds students represent a myriad of ethnic heritages and religious affiliations. Most come from single-parent homes or live with guardians. All have less than adequate financial resources - 50% of Shepherds students reside in Bridgeport where more than 95% of school-age children qualify for Free Lunch.
Thirteen years ago, there were five Shepherds students at one school. Today, despite a faltering economy, Shepherds' population is 70 students at five partnership schools, with expansion to Xavier High School in Middletown in 2009. Shepherds celebrated its fifth record high graduating class in June 2011, as 20 students earned their diplomas, 100% of whom earned college acceptances and ample financial aid/scholarship funds to attend. To-date, 156 Shepherds students have graduated with 90% of them enrolled in institutions of higher learning.
Sponsors pay all or part of the student’s four-year tuition and assume the responsibility of Mentor, providing individual guidance and direction over the high school journey. With their support, these youths become the first in their families to graduate from high school and pursue a college education.
With Shepherds, the six simple words - “I know I can do it!” - resound in their own voices.
